Mathematics

The Mathematics Department at Westfield School aims to: -

  • Develop an enjoyment for and a lasting interest in mathematics.
  • Help students to feel confident with mathematics culminating in academic success.
  • Develop an understanding of the principles underlying mathematics and the ability to apply these principles to future studies and vocations.
  • Develop mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for everyday living.

The department is staffed by a team of dedicated and enthusiastic specialist maths teachers: -

Mrs Fiona Swift

Mrs Liza Marshall

Mrs Hannah Morell

Mrs Emma Thompson

Mrs Sandra Williams

All students study mathematics up to GCSE level.  From entering Senior House to GCSE pupils are taught in ability sets so that the level of teaching provides them with appropriate challenge.  We enter pupils for either the Higher or Foundation level GCSE papers based on where we feel they are most likely to be successful.  To provide stretch and challenge we offer an additional GCSE in Further Maths to our most talented mathematicians.

In Sixth Form pupils can opt to take AS maths (one-year course) or A-level (two years). For students intending to study a mathematics related subject at University we also offer Further Mathematics at AS or A-level.

In the Mathematics Department we achieve excellent results through structured teaching, assessment and feedback.  Pupils' needs are individually assessed, and one-to-one support is provided where necessary through Maths Plus sessions at lunchtimes.
